In die grenzenlose Verwirrung, welche lange Zeit in der Systematik der Meerscblangen geherrscht hatte, ward zuerst im Jahre 1837 durch Schlegel Ordnung gebracht. Nur dem Scharfblick eines so ausgezeichnetenforschers und nur durch Vergleichung eines so reichen Materials, wie die Leyden'er Sammlung es besitzt, war es' möglich, jenes Chaos zu lichten. In seinem Essaz' mr la physionomz'e des Serpan-s gab Schlegel _vortrefl'liche Beschreibungen der sieben damals bekannten bauptsachlichsten Arten; durch scharfsinnige Kritik ordnete er die äusserst verwickelte Synonymie und wies mehre auf mangelhaften Abbildungen Russel's und Lacépéde's beruhende, fingirte Arten zurück.
