Excerpt from The Evolution of Industry
IN this book I have attempted to meet the request of the Editors that I should describe the recent changes which have given us the present condition of the working classes. It has only been possible to give an outline of events, and to suggest the principles which seem to me to be involved. In view of the fact that a volume has already been con tributed to this series on Socialism, I have stopped on the threshold of that subject, and have tried to make this study a way of ap proach to that larger question. I shall be glad if I have succeeded in giving a survey of the field which will incite to further exploration, and help to explain the unrest which is so great a feature of this critical time.
