Qui ant1quitus mortales primi et certas sedes occu pare atque ad humaniorem vitae cultum barbaros mores erudire exorsi sunt, dum toti essent in agendo, nihil pensi habuerunt snarum rerum memoriam po steris tradere, documentum et disciplinam. Quippe, veluti pueri, se resque suas nesciebant, et vita et praesenti aetate contenti, securi posterorum, mini mum de continuanda rerum et temporum notitia solli citi erant. Sed ubi puerilis aetas virili concessit, vi resque suas noverunt, et virium pulcherrima cipe rimenta apud posteros aliquid memoriae et landis habitura tum suamm rerum notitiam posteris impense tradere atque ex oblivione temporum Vindicare coepe runt. Praesertim vero vel solemnis vel incorrupti testi monii gratia, omnia, quae aliquam notitiae dignitatem prae se ferre viderentur, aereis vel marmoreis tabulis insculpta, quo longius eorum apud posteros memoria.
