Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. Published in three parts between 1786 and 1788, this book is a collection of ornithological papers by the naturalist Giovanni Antonio Scopoli. His writings were foundational in the field and the binomial names he gave to birds are still used today. Expanding on the work of Linnaeus, this book focuses on birds that had been found in new locations by contemporary explorers, and gives details on their appearance, nesting habits, and behavior. It also contains observations by Scopoli, and his identification and naming of a number of species observed by Sonnerat in New Guinea and the East Indies. The book's significance is as a reference point in the history of ornithology, describing and naming birds that were new to Western science, and establishing a system for avian taxonomy that set the stage for future research.
