Je suis obligé, bien à regret, de reconnaître que je n'ai pas encore rempli complètement le programme tracé en tête de cet Ouvrage. Les matières traitées dans le second Volume ont pris un développement imprévu, qui paraît justifié par leur importance pratique et le rôle qu'elles jouent comme con trole de toutes les théories.
J'ai discuté, en particulier avec beaucoup de détails, les phénomènes relatifs à la reflexion de la lumière sur les milieux isotropes transparents, les métaux et les substances cristallisées. Cette étude, que j'ai tâché de rendre aussi com plète que possible au point de vue expérimental, épargnera sans doute à beaucoup de physiciens l'obligation de consulter des Mémoires disséminés dans de nombreuses collections scientifiques, et dont la lecture est d'autant plus difficile que l'exposé des méthodes et le choix des notations y sont nécessairement très variés.
