Le tube digestif, encore appelé canal alimentaire, commence a l'orifice buccal et s'étend de la jusqu'à l'anus. Sa longueur, chez l'homme, est de 10 à 12 mètres il représente ordinairement six ou sept fois la longueur totaledu corps. Dans son long trajet, le tube digestif est constamment situé sur le plan antérieur ou ventral de la colonne vertébrale, qui le sépare du névraxe. Il occupe tout d'abord la face, où il prend naissance. Puis, il descend dans le cou, traverse successivement les trois grandes cavités thoracique, abdominale et pelvienne, et finalement vient s'ouvrir à la surface extérieure, un peu au - dessous du coccyx. Au cou, il entre en relation avec le conduit aéril'ère et tout particulièrement avec la portion de ce conduit qui est destinée à la phonation. Dans le thorax, il est situé dans le médiastin postérieur, entre les deux poumons et en arrière du coeur. Enfin, dans l'abdomen et dans le bassin, il entre en rapport avec les différentes formations de l'appareil génito - urinaire.
