Excerpt from Wisconsin Journal of Education, 1874, Vol. 4: Organ of the State Teachers' Association and of the Department of Public Instruction
My proposition is that, apart from prac tical considerations, the Latin and Greek languages are intrinsically the best for the purposes of discipline: so much the best, that, if a course were exclusively disciplinary, there should be no hesita tion, and in any course that admits of even but two languages, one of these should be one of the two.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This volume explores the relationship between education, the individual, society, and the state. Published in 1874, the book presents an analysis of the 19th-century American education system and reflects on the diversity of its student population, particularly in light of westward expansion and immigration of the era. The author, an education superintendent, asserts that education is essential for a free society and that it must be universally available to all. The author suggests that while rote memorization and obedience are useful to a point, they cannot foster true independence and self-governance as is required by American society. Instead, education, particularly via the study of the classics and mathematics, should focus on critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills. This philosophy, the author believes, prepares individuals to participate meaningfully in society and government, and ensures that both the individual and the nation can flourish.
