Es ist wohl kein Zweifel, dass die Verschmelzung des Cha rakterisirens mit der Darstellung des geschichtlichen Herganges für das biographische Einzelbild gleichermassen wie für das Ge malde ganzer Epochen Ideal des Schriftstellers sein muss. Doch gibt es Fälle, wo dasselbe schwer befolgbar ist, ja wo slch die entgegengesetzte, nach Gesichtspunkten, Begriflen trennende Methode empfiehlt. In einer solchen Lage befand ich mich mit meiner Arbeit uber Signorelli, weil die Berichte über sein Leben, besonders über seine Jugend so karg sind, weil das Datum so manchen Werkes von seiner Hand unbekannt ist. Und so ent schloss ich mich in der Hoffnung, dass meine Arbeit, wenn nicht ein harmonisches, künstlerisches, so doch ein wissenschaftliches Resultat ergeben moge, zu der scharfen, mehrfachen Section und Scheidung. Sogar die. Localhistorischen Partieen zog ich aus der Schilderung des Lebensganges hervor, da dieselben mit ihrer Weitläufigkeit, welche wegen der weltfernen Lage und (heutigen Obscurität der meisten einschlägigen Orte schwer vermeidlich war, das Wenige, was von Signorelli selbst zu berichten ist, all zusehr überwuchert hätten.
