Avrei desiderato di dar fuori questo terzo tomo del museo capitolino senza pure una linea di prefazione, sì perchè quello che si è detto nei primi due tomi basta suffi cientemente anche per questo e sì perchè il mondo, che una volta era tanto vago e ragionevolmente, delle prefazioni adesso, non meno ragionevolmente, se n'è annoiato. Ma non mi posso dispensare di ribattere bre vissimamente un' accusa che da per tutto si dà a coloro che si mettono Spiegare gli antichi eruditi avanzi del tempo edace, che per fortuna a noi sono pervenuti, quantun que guasti e dimezzati, e talora ridotti in miserabili frammenti.
Questi critici dunque vorrebbero che gli antiquari, i quali si accingono ad illustrarli colle loro spiegazioni, apportassero cose certe sicure, chiare ed evidenti e quasi quasi provate con tutto il rigore geometrico.
