En dégageant Homère de toutes les fictions mithologiques dont il s'environne, on voit qu'au fond ses poésies ne sont, pour la plupart qu'un tissu de traditions glorieuses, consacrées par les généalogies. C'est ce que l'on reconnaîtra facilement dans les longs discours qui précè dent les combats de ses héros ceux-ci se plaisent ordinairement à y rappeler la mémoire de leurs ancêtres.
