La seconde inscription (n° 11) du lac Barkoul fut érigée en l'an 640 sur les monts Che - lo - man 1% ïâ qui font partie des Monts Célestes, pour célébrer les mérites du général Kiang Hing pen 7131; du texte de l'inscription il ressort que ce général construisit là des machines de guerre fort in°génieuses, alors qu1l marchait contre le royaume de Kao - tch'ang â dont la capitale était située à Yar - khoto, à 20 li à l'ouest de la ville actuelle de Tourfan. Ce monument se rattache à des événements historiques importants àla fin de l'année 62 9 le religieux chi mois Hiuen - tsang ÿ_ s'étant mis en route pour aller en Inde, était arrivé à Hami; de là il avait dû se rendre auprès du roi de ao - tch'ang, qui lui avait remis une lettre de recommandation pour le kagan des Tou - kiue eifi (turcs) occidentaux; mais cette amitié même qui unissait le roi au kagan et qui permit en définitive au pèlerin de faire son voyage sans encombre, était une menace pour l'empire; l'expédition de gao, qui se termina par la prise de Tourfan fut le premier des coups que les Chi nois portèrent à la puissance des Tou - leiae occidentaux'.
