Le temple égyptien. Les anciens Égyptiens ont élevé à leurs dieux des temples massifs et indestructibles dont la toiture repose sur des murs épais et des colonnes puissantes. Ces murs de pierres taillées tenaient sans mortier par le seul poids de leur masse. Les colonnes portaient des chapiteaux évasés en forme de campane, ou serrés en forme de boutons de lotus, ou décorés de têtes de la déesse Hathor. On pénétrait dans l'édifice par le pylône, porte colossale surmontée d'une et flanquée de deux tours quadrangulaires à pans inclinés. On traversait des cours et de's salles \hyp_gstns avant d'atteindre au sanctuaire profond et secret qu'habitait le dieu. L'édifice, limité en hauteur, se déployait librement en largeur. Les parois des murs et des colonnes étaient historiées de figures des pharaons et des dieux gravées et peintes.
