Excerpt from Mr. Quixley of the Gate House
Presently the air began to throb, and two gleaming eyes came stealing across the fields. The porter turned up the gas, and the train steamed into the station. It had been market day at Rayford, and quite a small crowd of people alighted at Camptown, some inclined to be merry at the delay in getting home, whilst others were as vicious against railways as the porter had been.
One man, who seemed in no particular hurry, put his bag on a seat and lit a cigar. The light of the match as he protected it with his hands threw into sudden relief a singularly strong, if not exactly a handsome, face. The eyes were steady and unflinching, the mouth purposeful. Such a man would lead rather than be led, and be as good a friend as he could be an implacable enemy.
He waited until the crowd had dispersed, and then went towards the barrier.
