Cardinal Gotti is in his sixty-ninth year, as he was born at Genoa on March 29, 1834. His origin was Of the most modest kind, his father being a humble dock laborer. In his boyhood the future cardinal joined the order Of Discalced Carmelites. He developed a remarkable talent for physical science, and shortly after his ordination to the priesthood was made first professor of mathematics and natural philosophy in the College Of St. Ann in Genoa.
