DIANE SINGERMAN is Associate Professor in the Department of Government, School of Public Affairs, at the American University. She is the author of Avenues of Participation: Families, Politics, and Networks in Urban Quarters of Cairo. HOMA HOODFAR is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia University in Montreal. She has carried out research on the impact of development and social change on the lives of Muslim women in Cairo, Teheran, and Montreal.

This book presents a perspective largely missing from social science research on contemporary Cairo. Through this collaboration and presentation of our diverse research we hope to demonstrate the important role the household plays in the political economy, social structure, and political life of Egypt. This perspective has evolved from detailed and sustained field research and interviews among lower-income groups in Egyptian society within neighborhoods and communities of the Greater Cairo region, including those once at the threshold of the lower middle class who are rapidly losing economic ground.
