Buchbeschreibung Zustand: Sehr gut. 164 p., w/ images. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Scuffed dust jacket, otherwise in very good condition. - Content: Domitian has been portrayed by some authors as a monstrous tyrant, an inflexible pedant with no imagination, an incompetent general; by others as an able administrator and defender of the Empire. He rarely emerges as a living, breathing, person, subject to happiness and satisfaction, trauma and disappointments, like anyone else. The portrayal of the tyrant has been amended, the administrator debated and his character analysed, and anyone embarking upon a new biography owes a great deal to B. W. Jones, who missed nothing in the way of evidence, and to K. H. Waters, who attempted to understand Domitian. The contribution that this book hopes to make is to add a psychological dimension to the study of this complex man. The author owes a massive debt to Karen Dixon for suggesting that it was possible to write books in the first place, and to Charles Daniels for all the past encouragement and listening. Much gratitude is due to Professor Anthony Birley for continual benign assistance, and for saving me from errors. Charles Daniels and Ian Stephenson also read drafts and entered into discussions; Dr Julian Bennett conversed at length on points of detail, and allowed me to read his work on Trajan before it was published; Dr Jon Coulston advised on architectural and sculptural matters, and allowed me access to his enviably extensive collection of slides; Graeme Stobbs produced maps with minimum fuss and maximum speed and efficiency. The above-named do not agree with everything stated in this book, and faults remaining are to be laid at the author's door, preferably by politely worded letter. I should also like to thank Peter Kemmis-Betty and Charlotte Vickerstaffe for their encouragement and advice, and their quick response to queries. Similarly the staff of Newcastle University Library have always been unfailingly helpful and patient, and in particular the Inter-Library Loans staff consistently perform above the call of duty.
