Là aussi est une lacune qu'à mon tour j'ai taché de com bler, mais dans des proportions restreintes, car le sujet est immense et exigerait plusieurs volumes. Je n'ai nullement cherché à rivaliser avec Albert R. Frey auteur d'un gros dictionnaire intitulé Sobriquets and Nie/manies, London, s. D.; moins encore à ériger ces recherches en théorie seien tifique, à l'exemple de Ferguson (surnames as a Science, London, Je me contente simplement de demander à la littérature arabe ce qu'il faut entendre par lalïab, et les causes très diverses, souvent insaisissables, de ses appii cations.
