Excerpt from The Church of England, as to Her Excellencies and Defects: With a Plan of Ecclesiastical Reform in Her Spiritualities and Temporalities
He sincerely believes that these desirable oh jects will be really secured by a timely, judicious, necessary, and salutary amelioration of her faults. Having narrowly scrutinized the motives which led him to undertake the invidious and responsible task of a Reformer, he thinks he can appeal to the searcher of all hearts in justification thereof.
Should it then, as it possibly may be asked by those who occupy the high places of authority, what could have prompted him to provoke public attention to such a subject, he would reply to the questionists in the spirited words of Terence Homo sum, et nihil humani, a me alienum puto.' If that apology should not be deemed sufficient, he would modestly claim indulgence for partici pating in the devout and benevolent feelings of the angelic host, when they came purposely from heaven to announce the incarnation of Christ, saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will towards men.
