Excerpt from Report of the Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults, 1989
Two approaches can be used to lower blood cholesterol levels. The first is the subject of this report: a patient-based approach that seeks to identify individuals at high risk who will benefit from intensive intervention efforts. The goal here is to establish criteria that define the candidates for medical intervention and to provide guidelines on how to detect, set goals for, treat, and monitor these patients over time. The second approach, the population (public health) strategy, aims to shift the distribution of cholesterol levels in the entire population to a lower range. These two approaches are complementary and, together, represent a coordinated strategy aimed at reducing cholesterol levels and coronary risk.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book provides practical guidelines for clinicians to use in measuring and reducing blood cholesterol in adult patients. It adds a more specific set of recommendations to basic policies for modifying the cholesterol levels in whole population groups and focuses on caring for individual patients. The author presents evidence of the causal relationship between LDL-cholesterol and CHD and the magnitude of the reduction in CHD by lowering LDL-cholesterol levels. The book classifies patients by total and LDL-cholesterol levels using cutpoints to define candidates for medical intervention. The author provides an action scheme based on LDL-cholesterol level for dietary treatment or drug therapy. The key index for clinical decision-making about cholesterol-lowering therapy is the level of LDL-cholesterol. The book also includes initial classification and recommended follow-up based on total cholesterol, dietary treatment, drug treatment, and monitoring and follow-up of patients. Overall, this book offers a comprehensive guide to managing high blood cholesterol, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach and the significance of lowering LDL-cholesterol levels to reduce the risk of CHD.
