As an extension of Lie's theories on transformation groups, the author establishes how differential invariants can be deduced from the equations of definition of a group. The concept of a 'reduced form' is discussed and it is shown how differential invariants can help obtain new parameters for invariant transformations. The author applies these principles to determine the invariants of a surface, according to both conformal transformations of space and projective transformations, and examines invariants previously obtained by a different method to solve a problem treated by Roger Liouville.
