Le lettere che pubblichiamo non sono che una piccola parte di quelle che il Ricotti scrisse al Fea; molte delle quali, trattando principalmente di cose famigliari, non crediamo utile dare alle luce. Scegliemmo di preferenza quelle che possono avere maggiore inte resse, tanto per la storia della vita e degli studi del Ricotti, quanto per le notizie politiche e letterarie, e per le considerazioni morali o d'altra natura che contengono. Ivi il Ricotti si palesa quale egli era, come privato, come cittadino e come uomo di lettere. Ivi si mani festano la bontà del suo cuore, la rettitudine delle sue intenzioni, la prontezza del suo ingegno: ivi si possono scorgere la sua devozione al dovere, il suo amore per la patria, il suo tenace desiderio di gio varle. Ivi si rivelano I disegni del giovane, le disillusioni delluomo maturo, le ansietà, le gioie e i passaggieri scoramenti dello scritto re, e ad intervalli si tradiscono pure le sofferenze fisiche a cui lo assoggettava una salute malferma, e se ne trae argomento ad am mirare vieppiù la sua singolare operosità. E veramente non sarebbe facile intendere come, non ostante codeste sofferenze e le cure non lievi delle importanti cariche da lui successivamente occupate, egli trovasse il modo di lasciare Opere di lunga lena, come le storie delle Compagnie di ventura e della Monarchia piemontese, la: Vita di Cesare Balbo e il Corso di storia moderna, di cui due vo.
