Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating world of medieval French religious eloquence, specifically exploring the sermon "Ad Deum vadit" by Jean Gerson, a prominent figure of the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Gerson, Chancellor of the University of Paris and a leading voice for Church unity during a period of great turmoil, stands as a bridge between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The author examines the sermon's intricate tapestry of ideas, revealing its connections to the mystical trends of the 12th century, the scholasticism of the 13th century, and the prevailing trends of 14th-century preaching. The book explores how Gerson skillfully blends these diverse influences, demonstrating his mastery of rhetoric and his ability to engage both the intellectual and emotional sensibilities of his audience. While analyzing the sermon's structure and its reliance on allegory, the author highlights Gerson's powerful use of imagery, particularly in his portrayals of the Virgin Mary, which resonate with both the devout and the secular. Ultimately, the book offers a rich and insightful exploration of a pivotal sermon that not only reflects its historical context but also sheds light on the enduring themes of faith, suffering, and redemption that continue to captivate audiences today.
