Excerpt from L'Ile de St. Pierre Dite l'Ile de Rousseau, dans le Lac de Bienne
L'ile de st.-pierre est située au milieu du lac de Bienne, à deux lieues de Bienne, à trois de Neuchâtel, et à six de Berne. Elle peut avoir quatre mille pas, ou les deux tiers d'une lieue de Suisse de circonférence, et sa surface contient environ cent vingt arpens de terre, dont un tiers est en vignoble, l'autre en champs et prés, et le reste est laissé en bois., Sa figure est un triangle un peu allongé, dont la pointe est tournée vers l'ouest. Le côté septentrional s'élevant par une pente rapide d'environ cent vingt pieds de haut, forme une terrasse couronnée d'un beau bois de chênes, tandis que Vers le midi de riantes collines, couvertes de vignes d'arbres fruitiers et de jardins, vont se perdre doucement dans une plaine fertile qui renferme des champs de blé et des prairies. De toutes parts s'élèvent sur les bords du lac des peupliers, des saules, des arbres à fruits, qui environnent l'ile d'une enceinte de verdure, et couvrent de leur ombre plusieurs petites baies qui servent d'asile à des bateaux.
