Equidem illins obfcuritatis has potifii mum quatuog canfi'as effe arbitror: perfectio nem linguae e coniuncto diverfarum aetatum ufu enatam; fermonis apud diverfas gentes dis crepantiam; interitum plurimorum fcriptorùm, maximeque eorum, qui Dorica atque Acolica lingua fcripferant; grammaticorum deniquear tem ac difciplinam. Ex his illud tantum, quod poliremo loco attuli, defenfione indiget. At que equidem tantum abefi ut grammaticorum libros arti grammaticae multum_profuiffe cre dam, eqs ut magis, fi a quibusdam partibus discedatur, infigni ad eam rem impedimento fuifîe cenfeam. Nam ut omnium artium tenuia funt nec iàtis firma initia, fic idem in gramma ticorum doctrina evenit: quae quum inclinato iam Graecae linguae flore ab hominibus non lane ad eam rem omnino idoneis et inventa et quodammodo etiam perfecta cfi°et, fieri non potuit, quin hi ipfi polica, deperditis antiquio rum plerisque fcrip.tis, auctoritatem longe, ac debebant, maiorem adipifcerentur. Quae qui dem auctoritas aliquanto minor foret, fi aut omnia grammaticorum fcripta ad noflram,'aeta tem pervenifl°ent aut ea certe, quae adhuc ex, fiant, e bibliothecarum latebris in lucem ef ent protracta.
