Excerpt from The Works of the Rev. Jonathan Swift, D. D., Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin, Vol. 23 of 24: With Notes, Historical and Critical

We are ashamed to find so ill a taste prevail, as to make it a necessary work to do this justice to ourselves. It is very possible for any author to write below himself; either his subject not proving so fruitful, or fitted for him, as he at first imagined; or his health, or his hu mour, or the present disposition of his mind, unqualify ing him at that juncture: however, if he possessed any distinguishing marks of style, or peculiarity of think ing, there would remain in his least successful writings some few tokens, whereby persons of taste might disco ver, him.

This book is a collection of the author's thoughts on the art of poetry, and in particular the way in which poets can achieve the effect of the 'bathos' or 'sinking'. The author argues that the bathos is a legitimate and effective literary technique, and he provides numerous examples from the works of famous poets to support his case. The book is a valuable resource for poets and students of poetry, and it provides a unique and insightful perspective on the art of writing poetry.
