Excerpt from The Track of a Storm
I had been to Paris on business of the bank, and was on my way home. I am not fond of travelling at the best of times; and the end Of November is not, as a rule, the best of times for travelling. The rule was not proved by November, 1832. It was no exception in the matter of November weather. I don't like bad English weather, but I like bad French weather even worse. I was glad to get into the Dover packet. I was positively relieved to hear the good, hearty swear ing Of Christian sailors once more. The passage was cold, but it was not tedious, and by eleven o'clock that night I was enjoying a glass of hot brandy and water before a big fire in the snuggest corner of the Ship.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the gripping true story of a bank manager who went from his normal, quiet life into the extraordinary world of crime investigation. He was robbed on the Kings highway in 1832, and in 1833 prosecuted the man accused of murder and robbery committed at the same time. The accused was sentenced to be hanged but was instead transported for life, a fact which weighs heavily on the author's mind. He wonders if he made a mistake in his identification, and if an innocent man has paid the price. Questions of justice eat away at him. The author explores the events leading up to the robbery, provides a detailed account of the trial and its aftermath, and discusses the moral dilemmas he faced as he tried to reconcile his desire to see justice done with his fear that he may have been mistaken. An insightful look at the criminal justice system of the time, this book also provides the author's personal reflections on morality, mistaken identity, guilt, and remorse.
