Excerpt from The Problem of Religious Education
In the foregoing an attempt has been made to state the problem of religious education and to indicate the solution. The problem is acknowledged to be a complex and difficult one, but it is really the most important that confronts all those who have the real, the per manent interests of our country at heart. The happiness of individ nais taken separately and variously grouped depends upon the inculca tion,of right principles and the practice of those principles. For their maintenance the home, the church and the state should each do its part in its own sphere and each could do much more than it is now doing. When every Christian influence is brought to bear on the problem it will be solved, and not till then. May prejudices be sup pressed, and minor differences ignored, so that Canadians may make a general advance towards the attainment of the ideal in this momentous matter. The solution lies in the will, and in the good-will of the people.

The author delves into philosophical, practical, and historical contexts of religious education, especially the role of the state. He positions the need for religious education within broader societal trends and concerns, such as the pursuit of materialism and the increasing secularization of public life. While recognizing the importance of individual faith and study, the author strongly advocates for the state to play an active role in promoting religious education within public schools, arguing that its benefits to society and the individual far outweigh any objections. The book concludes with a passionate plea for greater cooperation and tolerance among religious denominations, expressing an optimistic hope for the future of religious education.
