Excerpt from A Book of Old Testament Lessons for Public Reading in Churches, Vol. 2: A Lectionary; Introduction and Notes
The choice of these lessons has been spread over years. Some come from the old Church of England lessons, others from the new plan of the same church, to which allusion is made in the Introduction. Some come from John Wesley's selection, others from the lectionaries of the churches of Lutheranism both European and American; still others have been suggested by selections made for literary quality such as the beautiful one by Sir James George Frazer,1 and perhaps a very few are personal. The list has suffered many revisions, passages have gone in and been taken out, some have been shortened and others lengthened. The order has been bettered, and, alas! Perhaps worsened, while the list has lain for weeks or months before another revision; but enthusiasm and interest never died out.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a series of selected Old Testament lessons for public reading in churches, accompanied by notes and an introduction detailing the history of lectionariesâ"books that establish an order for reading from the Bible during religious services. Tracing their development from the synagogue tradition of the Jewish Church, the book highlights the importance of reading from the Old Testamentâ"a practice that has fallen into disuse in many churches. The author laments this neglect and provides a rich selection of passages to encourage a revival of the practice. Designed to be read aloud, the lessons in this book are carefully chosen for their literary merit as well as their instructional value, and they convey the meaning of the words to the ear, not just to the eye. Readers will be captivated by the depth of the Old Testament's divine story, exploring themes of God's dealings with humans, his address to their souls, and his plan for guiding them, thereby gaining a deeper understanding of God's place in human history and his relevance to our lives today.
