Les travaux dont la relalion fait l'objet du présent mémoire ont été exécutés pendant l'hiver de 1913 - 1914, à Jerusalem, sur le site de l'acrowle de la ville primitive, où les initiateurs de l'entreprise s'étaient proposé de retrouver les tombeaue des rois de Juda, la nécropole où furent ensevelis, aux côtés de David et de Salomon, tous leurs successeurs judéeus jusqu'à une date avancée de la période royale. Aux termes de l'hypothèse initiale qui gouvernait la recherche, l'aire à explorer était circonscrite de manière très nette, et notre fouille fut organisée et poursuivie en conséquence. Comme il était à prévoir toutefois, eide la manière la plus heu reuse, les déblaiements firent sortir au jour des objets de nature et d'époque extrêmement diverses, en première ligne, sans doute. Les restes dévastés de grands tombeaux judéens qui semblent bien avoir fait partie de la nécropole royale, mais, à côté de cela, nom bre de monuments et de vesliges importants pour l'archéologie de l'acropole ou pour l'histoire de la ville des temps ultérieurs. Afin de bien comprendre, par la suite, comment les opérations du tra vail se sont développées el: enchaînées, il convient que d'ebord nous remoulions au stade des Considérations initiales qui ont situé et orienté nos premières attaques de fouille.
