Excerpt from The Professor and the Fossil
I arrived in Paris on the day of the publication of the nazi-soviet Pact, and my assignment was over. Now the world's newspapers would not have even a ten-line filler on the tenth page to Spare for the peripheral tragedy of the Jewish refugees. Moreover, the traffic in rescue was tempo farily disrupted, to be resumed later under more desperate circumstances. Not that war was considered quite certain; nor, when it was declared, was its continuance considered quite certain. (let the incredulous reader consult the news paper files for the early days of the phony war. But the pact itself was a tremendous event; and if war was uncertain, both before and after the declaration, the wild maneuvering was now being conducted on the very edge of the abyss.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an illuminating exploration of the ideas presented by Arnold Toynbee in his comprehensive work, A Study of History, with a particular focus on his controversial views on the Jewish people. The author meticulously analyzes Toynbee's assertion that Jewish history effectively ended almost two thousand years ago, rendering the Jewish people a "fossil" in the present day. The author challenges this notion with a nuanced and detailed examination of Jewish history and culture, demonstrating the persistence and vitality of Jewish identity and creativity. The author argues that Toynbee's perspective is deeply rooted in biases and oversimplifications, and he provides a compelling counter-narrative that highlights the ongoing contributions of Jewish people to Western civilization. This book offers a thought-provoking critique of Toynbee's influential work, shedding light on the complex relationship between history, memory, and human identity. It invites readers to grapple with questions about the nature of cultural continuity and the ever-changing tapestry of human history.
