The following pages have been compiled during the many hours of retirement and solitude which have fallen to my lot in the course of a few years past. Whatever has occurred in my reading, having any reference to the peculiar situation of the Deaf and Dumb, I have perused with a degree of interest, which can scarcely be conceived by him who has not known, by his own sad experience, what it is to be condemned to cease less silence, and, while surrounded by those to whom knowledge obtains a ready entrance through, the ear, to feel that, in this respect, he is cut Off from the cheerful ways of men, - and wisdom at one entrance quite shut out. To collect and ar range these materials has been my solace during many hours which others have devoted to the pleasures of social intercourse.
