The recent atrocious murder of one of our most quiet and orderly citi zens, James Hughes, and the summary arrest, trial and conviction of the murderers, have awakened such a universal feeling of interest in the whole affair, as well as, in fact, in every thing relating to the former deeds of blood that have been enacted in our city, that the author has concluded to give a short sketch of the more prominent homicides which have taken place here, with a list of every person who has suffered the extreme penalty of the law in this county. As a few of the well-known tragedies, enacted in our city, have been omitted from this sketch alto gether, the only reason given is, that the broad mantle of charity should be thrown over the first fault Of persons who never committed but one Offense, and are now occupying useful and honorable positions in society, or have left families that are now respected and honored.
