Excerpt from English Poetry and Its Contribution to the Knowledge of a Creative Principle: With a Preface
I have always remembered a distinction drawn by R. G. Colling wood at the beginning of The Principles of Art. He contrasts two types of theorist in the field of aesthetics: the 'philosopher aesthetician' and the 'artist-aesthetician', and draws attention to the different types Of error to which they are exposed. If I advert here to these two kinds Of theorist, it is because Signor Vivante seems to me to escape the mistakes of both, and because the dis tinction may help me to elucidate his particular merit.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the heart of English poetry, exploring its unique contribution to our understanding of a fundamental creative principle. The author argues that the concept of a self-active principle, something not entirely determined by its conditions, has been a cornerstone of philosophical inquiry for centuries. Yet, this book contends, English poetry presents a uniquely powerful and direct expression of this principle, one that goes beyond mere intellectual inquiry. The author examines a rich tapestry of English poets, from Shakespeare to Swinburne, to reveal how their works embody this creative force. The book explores themes of joy and sorrow, love and death, all interpreted not as mere emotions or experiences, but as expressions of this underlying principle of self-activity. The author skillfully navigates the complexities of subjective experience, examining how poets use language to capture the ephemeral nature of the creative process. The book ultimately presents a compelling argument for the philosophical depth of poetry, suggesting that its beauty is intrinsically linked to the exploration of inner being. This exploration of a foundational principle in English poetry provides a unique and insightful perspective on the creative spirit that continues to inspire and resonate throughout the ages.
