Excerpt from The Old Doctrine of Faith Asserted in Opposition to Certain Modern Innovations
Mr. Erskine, Mr. Jones, Mr. Dore, and a 2many others: to the second class belong the fathers of the two established churches of these kingdoms, most of the puritan writers, and among the modems, Gre gory, Dwight, Scc. The following pas gage, quoted with approbation from the writings of Dr. Watts, by Dr. Gregory in his Letters, 18 so express on this point, that I shall insert it at length. With regard to this true faith, it has been justly observed that the words and from which continually return upon us the reading the Greek Testa ment, should be frequently translated by mm and trusting in God or Christ, especially where the preposition iv or '~c is added to it: and it should not be so often called belief or believing, for it is not such a me assent to the gospel of Christ as excites hope or trust in mercy.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a profound exploration of the concept of faith, a topic that has sparked debate among theologians for centuries. The author contends that a fundamental misunderstanding of faith's true nature has led to confusion and misinterpretations of crucial Christian doctrines. The book meticulously examines the historical evolution of differing perspectives on faith, tracing the divide between those who view it as mere intellectual assent to biblical truths and those who believe it encompasses a deeper trust and reliance on God through Jesus Christ. The author delves into the writings of prominent theologians from various eras, including the reformers and puritans, to highlight the emphasis they placed on the transformative power of faith as a relational experience with Christ. By carefully analyzing the original Hebrew and Greek words used in scripture to express faith, the author argues that trust and confidence are integral to its essence. The book challenges the notion that faith is solely about believing propositions and instead presents it as a dynamic and personal engagement with the person of Christ. This book offers valuable insights for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of faith and its central role in the Christian life. By rediscovering the richness of faith as a transformative relationship with Christ, readers will gain a fresh perspective on the profound implications for salvation, sanctification, and the pursuit of a life of true devotion.
