The candidate or graduand was presented for the degree by one of the faculty, usually the Dean, who was and is still called the Promoter. He stands technically in the position of a Godfather or sponsor for the person upon whom the degree is to be conferred. Even to-day, at the graduation ceremony of the University of Dublin, the Promoter says, I present to you these my sons, etc.
