Excerpt from Modern State Trials, Vol. 1 of 2: Revised and Illustrated With Essays and Notes
The two cases of murder, that of Lord William Russell by Courvoisier, and of Mr. Drummond by m'naughton, involve tepics of absorbing interest at the period of the occurrence, and of enduring interest to all time. In the one are involved the rights and duties, the privileges and immunities of counsel for prisoners; in the other, the fearful question of responsibility for crime how far moral insanity alone may exonerate the sufferer from the consequences of his guilt; whether m'naughton was not influenced by the same or ganie necessity which forces the cataract with rushing might from the precipice, or rather by that demoniacal possession which drove the herd furiously down the steep into the sea. If not a free agent, he certainly ought not to suffer; but the fact is one most difficult to determine.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book covers the trial of John Frost, a leader of the Chartist movement in the United Kingdom during the 19th century. The Chartist movement sought to extend voting rights to all adult males in Britain, among other political reforms. Frost was charged with high treason after leading an armed uprising in Newport in 1839, and this volume includes a detailed account of the trial and its outcome. The trial was a significant event in British history, as it highlighted the growing tensions between the working class and the government, and the book provides valuable insights into the social and political climate of the time. The author's analysis of the legal and historical context of the trial is particularly valuable, as it helps readers understand the complex forces that shaped the outcome of the case.
