Excerpt from The Study of History: A Lecture
The first question which the student of history has now 'to ask himself is, Whether history is governed by' necessary laws? If it is, it ought to be written and read as a science. It may be an imperfect science as yet, owing to the complexity of the phenomena, the incompleteness of the observations, the want of -a rational method; but, in its nature, it is a science, and 1s capable of being brought to perfection.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the question of whether history evolves according to scientific laws. The author examines various theories, including those that see history as driven by necessity, free will, or a combination of both. They discuss the concept of historical progress, and whether it is primarily intellectual or moral in nature. The book also explores the role of individuals and institutions in shaping the course of history, and how the study of history can provide insights into the human condition. Ultimately, the author argues that history is a complex phenomenon that cannot be fully explained by any single theory, and that it is best understood as a combination of necessity, free will, and chance. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
