Conjectural emendations are proposed for corrupt passages, many of which have long vexed scholars, based on a comprehensive examination of the manuscript tradition and the ancient commentators. The author argues that many readings found in early manuscripts and adopted by editors, such as Heyne and Ribbeck, are inferior to those found in later manuscripts. The author aims to establish a critical text of Virgil which is as close as possible to that which the poet originally wrote. The book will be of interest to scholars of Latin literature, especially those working on Virgil, textual criticism, and the history of scholarship.
