Contrairement à l' assertion de quelques historiens, on ne peut certaine ment conclure que l'une des autres causes pour lesquelles évolution de la Renaissance s' opéra dans nos lagunes plus lentement qu'ailleurs, doive être attribuée à l' insuffisante générosité des Mécène5. En effet, même en dehors des grands et nombreux édifices sacrés par lesquels se traduisait pompeusement le sentiment religieux, nous avons encore aujourd' hui dans les monuments assez de preuves du zèle des Mécènes vénitiens d'alors pour le culte de l'art, et particulièrement dans les édifices privés de la première moitié du XV° siècle, pour ne pas craindre, numériquement du moins, une comparaison avec n' im porte quelle autre ville.
