Dazu kam noch als zweites Moment der Umstand, dass vor liegendes Buch nicht lediglich für Philologen, wie diess bei J ordans vortrefiiicher Arbeit sicher der Fall ist, geschrieben sein sollte. Ver fässer hat sich jeden Gebildeten als Leser gedacht, vorab freilich den vollreifen, nicht den Schüler, wie C. Ziegler in seinem für diesen Zweck ganz tüchtigen Buche: Illustrationen zur Topographie des alten Rom.
Stuttg. 1873. Doch auch demjenigen, welcher philologisch zu prüfen in der Lage oder geneigt ist, wurde Gelegenheit hiezu dadurch geboten, dass jeder Behauptung, soweit sie nicht persönliche Schlussfolgerung, das entsprechende Citat beigegeben ist, wie diess auch mit der vorliegenden neuenliteratur geschah. Er wird vielleicht dabei finden, dass der Ver fasser keineswegs in bequemem Anlehnen lediglich irgend einer Vorarbeit gefolgt ist, und dass, wenn auch der philologisch-antiquarische Theil nicht der Hauptzweck des Buches, doch dieser weder oberflächlich noch unkritisch behandelt ist, wie denn auch in dem schmalen' Raum der Citate mehrel Lebensjahre des Verfassers begraben liegen.
