Excerpt from The American Biblical Repository, Vol. 12: Devoted to Biblical and General Literature, Theological Discussion, the History of Theological Opinions, Etc.; Nos. 23, 24; Whole Nos. 55, 56
Sacred music as a divine institution, was not destined, like the ancient Jewish ritual, to decay. It is to stand while time endures, as a lively representation of the worship of the sanc tuary above. Nor can we doubt that it will yet be seen to operate more efficiently than ever, in enlivening the devotions of the sincere worshipper. That there is something wrong in the present manner of sustaining it, is freely admitted. Indeed, there is so much which is wrong, that it seems difficult to deter mine where to begin or to end the recital. But it is not our present object to speak of the number and character of abuses. A more. Delicate task lies before us, and one which we lmpe will prove on the whole more beneficial. We shall endeavor to dis cover to our readers the principal source of these abuses, and point out the only sure and practical remedy.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the historical evolution of sacred music, from its ancient origins to its contemporary significance. It explores the ways in which secular and sacred music have intersected and influenced one another throughout the centuries, and argues that the increasing secularization of sacred music has led to a decline in its effectiveness as a tool for religious worship. The author proposes that sacred music should be approached with a specific and exclusive focus on its religious purposes, and that musicians and performers should strive to cultivate a deep understanding of the spiritual significance of the music they create and perform. Through this approach, the author believes that sacred music can rediscover its power as an instrument of spiritual growth and edification.
