Excerpt from Syllabus of a Course of Lectures on "the Babylonian Period in Hebrew History"
Manaeseh came to the throne in 696. He seemed to have inherited the compromising spirit of Ahaz. Politically it seemed wise to conciliate Assyria. Jehovah, as taught by the prophetic party, was discredited and reaction was in the air. The masses turned back madly to the half-heathenish deity they had wor shipped and sought to conciliate him by the multiplicity of their sacrifices, while the introduction of the gods of the nations, which could not be offensive to him, might secure advantage to the land. The completeness of the reaction is indicated (l)'1n the description of it in 2 Kings xxi., and (2) 1n the description of the reforms that followed in 2 Kings xxiii. Prophetic opposition was not tolerated. The martyrs were a multitude, and trad1t10n places Isaiah himself amongst them.
