Excerpt from The British Essayists, Vol. 44: With Prefaces, Historical and Biographical
O? The name of Orpheus grammarians reckon no fewer than five epic poets their histories are ia volved in fable, and their distinctions uncertain and obscure. The Thracian Orpheus, who is the elder of the name, is said to have been the disciple of Linus, and to have lived before the Trojan war eleven ages: he was a prophet as well as a poet, and instituted many ceremonies in the Pagan theoo logy; he delivered precepts in verse relative to the modes of initiation: the mysterious rites of Ceres and Bacchus are supposed to have originated with him, but as it is pretty clear that these Egyptian, they might be introduced, but not ih vented, by Orpheus.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the origins of Greek poetry from the early Greek poets Orpheus and Musaeus through Homer and the tragic playwrights. The author delves into the themes of love, heroism, and religion found throughout the works of these poets, whose influence looms large over Western literature. Exploring the emergence of epic and lyric poetry, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the development of early Greek literature. The author argues that Greek poetry arose from the need to communicate religious practices and beliefs, and that as Greek culture blossomed so too did the role of the poet as a cultural figure. Providing a detailed historical backdrop, this book is both a primer for those new to the subject and a valuable resource for scholars of Greek poetry.
