Une étude consacrée à un sculpteur de l'antiquité ne saurait être conçue comme la biographie d'un maître mo derne. Prétendre établir avec rigueur la chronologie de ses oeuvres, vouloir suivre d'étape en étape le développe ment de son style, serait une entreprise chimérique. Les renseignements que les textes anciens nous fournissent sur la personnalité des artistes grecs sont a peu près nuls; ceux qui ont trait à leur vie se réduisent trop souvent à des anecdotes sans grande valeur. Leurs oeuvres ne nous sont en général connues que par des copies, et si une heu reuse fortune nous livre un original, il faut, pour le reste, procéder par induction. Ce n'est donc pas, à proprement parler, une biographie critique de Lysippe que je me propose d'écrire, la nature de ce volume ne comportant ni les discussions de textes ni les comparaisons de monu ments par lesquelles on procède d'ordinaire dans les études d'histoire de l'art antique. Je voudrais me homer à réunir ici les notions certaines ou vraisemblables, à grouper les oeuvres dont on peut, avec le plus de sécurité, faire hon neur a Lysippe et dégager les traits les plus saillants de la physionomie de l'artiste, telle qu'on peut la restituer aujourd'hui.
