Be sure to protect young chicks from predatory animals. Skunks, foxes, hawks and even stray cats cause a gerat deal of loss, not to mention what rats may do. It is well to shut the youngsters up at night and make sure that the openings are covered by wire, so that rats cannot get in.

As the chicks grow, separate the sex es. Our plan has always been to pick out the cockerels as soon as they can be distinguished. Put them in a pen by themselves and condition as broilers. It seldom pays to try and raise the cockerels unless they are extra fine ones. Cockerels which are raised for breeders should be given ample range to grow and develop. The rest of the cockerels should be sold as broilers.

When the cockerels are taken from the pullets it will give more room for the pullets, but watch and see that they have plenty of room. They grow fast. Some poultrymen allow at least 4 1 inches of roosting space for each pullet from 2 to 4 months of age.
