Excerpt from Peter Cornclips, a Tale of Real Life: With Other Poems and Songs
IN presentingsthis volume to the public notice, I Shall so far comply with. The use and of authors of the present day, as to give something by way of preface. It may be expected by some, that, like many of my lprecursors, I will introduce my work into the World with an apology, craving the ih dulgence of the public, and the mercy of Ithe rigid critic to the imperfections of my |poetry, on the ground, that it was written for my own amusement, rather than for the public eye. I will do no such thing. I will not sacrifice candour at the shrine of false modesty. These productions, howev/er imper feet they maybe, were written with a View topublication, and a number of them have already found their way into newspapers and magazines at various times. I do not see the propriety of lighting a candle to put it under a bushel, nor 'the use of a man's Sitting down to ete merely for his own gratification, however humble'his talents. Nor can I see a reason why he should hoard up with a miser's care.
