Excerpt from The Year Book, 1919: Published by the Senior Class, Salem State Normal School

A teacher's education is not ended after he has secured his position; then is the time to work the hardest, for he has yet to prove what he is worth. Careful prepara tion of work and reading of professional books and papers will help him to do superior work.

A great deal can be done by one's self towards making progress in one's profes sion, but a person needs the inspiration of working and studying with other people. It may be that many will seek better positions, as head of a department, supervisor ship of primary grades, or teaching in a high school or a normal school. In order to accomplish this end, outside study is necessary. Summer schools offer a variety of courses. The most accessible for Massachusetts teachers are Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City, Harvard University in Cambridge, Summer School for Teachers in Amherst, Summer School in Hyannis, and Dartmouth Summer School in Hanover, N. H. A year's leave of absence may sometimes be granted for this purpose, perhaps with a promise of increased salary. No teacher ought to be satisfied until he has made progress in his chosen line of work.

The members of the Year Book Staff express their appreciation and gratitude to all the faculty members, classmates, and undergraduates who have helped to make possible the success of the year book of 1919.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book scrutinizes the teaching profession's evolutionary arc, emphasizing its exponential growth in recent years. Teaching had, over the years, suffered from attrition and faced a disheartening loss of experienced educators, while relatively few signed on to replace them. The book suggests that this trend has been reversed due to prevailing wartime conditions. The author posits that this shift precipitates an unparalleled opportunity for those seeking a profession that offers stability, opportunity for rapid advancement, and a real chance to contribute meaningfully to their communities. The book also addresses a fascinating array of topics such as the need for appropriately trained teachers, the social and political complexities endemic to education, and the teacher's ever-present need for professional development. This book argues that continuing education is not a one-and-done pursuit, but rather a lifelong endeavor. The insights provided in this book on the value, status, and rewards of teaching will be sure to resonate with committed educators and pique the interest of those contemplating the profession. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
