Excerpt from Cooperative Economic Insect Report, Vol. 9: July 10, 1959
The Weather Bureau's 30-day outlook for July calls for temperatures to average above seasonal normals over the southern half of the Nation, below normal over the northern third, and near normal in between. The first week of the month will see a break in the current heat wave over most eastern portions of the Nation. Precipitation is expected to exceed normal over most of the northern third of the country, while subnormal amounts are predicted over the Lower Mississippi Valley and the far Southwest. Near normal rainfall is indicated in unspecified areas.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the patterns and factors driving population increases in Mormon crickets. The author utilizes historical data, field research, and ecological modeling through statistical analysis to identify fluctuating weather patterns, landscape changes, and predator dynamics that can drive population increases in "outbreak" years. The author provides evidence of outbreaks coinciding with wet springs that enhance plant growth, creating ample food for nymphs, followed by dry summers that concentrate them near scarce water sources. The book discusses how human activities, such as grazing and fire suppression, can alter landscapes and vegetation, creating conditions favorable for Mormon cricket outbreaks. This book will be of interest to ecologists, entomologists, and land managers seeking to understand and manage Mormon cricket outbreaks.
