Excerpt from A Telegraphic Code for the Use of the United States Public Health Service
If a medical officer is familiar with the use of telegraphic codes in general, there should be little difficulty ln understanding the general arrangement of this code.
N o index is necessary for the reason that both code words and cap tions are alphabetically arranged throughout except that Depart ments and officers of the Government, Chronological, and Days of the week precede the general code in the order mentioned.
Every officer using this code is enjoined to keep it under lock and key and as a part of his personal effects.
This code should be read carefully from beginning to end, in order that a general knowledge may be obtained as to the contents and the possibilities for constructing dispatches in the most economical manner consistent with the proper understanding of the message on the part of the person receiving it. A medical officer should never send a message without first considering whether he would under stand the message, if received by himself.
