Excerpt from Practical Observations on the Nature and Treatment of Tuberculosis of the Hip-Joint
Exposure to cold, intense or protracted, is usually enumerated as another exciting cause of the malady, and generally with a better Show Of reason. That it may, ln such an event, conduce to this result, especially in a child of feeble constitution, ill-fed, and with an impoverished state of the blood, hardly admits Of doubt. It is well known that cold is one Of the most common and powerful causes Of pulmonary consumption and of strumous disease Of the neck. Living in damp, under-ground, and ill-ventilated apartments Operates in the same manner. Simple suppression of the cutaneous perspiration, suddenly induced, as when a person is exposed to a heavy current of air, might, it may be presumed, easily occasion the affection in one predisposed to its occurrence.
